SICKLE CELL ANEMIA: THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY TREATMENT

Abstract

Sickle cell anemia is a hereditary hemoglobinopathy with high global prevalence, characterized by a genetic mutation that produces hemoglobin S, responsible for the deformation of red blood cells, chronic hemolysis, and vaso-occlusive events. This study aimed to analyze the importance of early diagnosis, with emphasis on neonatal screening, and to highlight the role of the biomedical professional in this process. This is a qualitative, descriptive, and bibliographic research, based on scientific articles, guidelines, and official documents published between 2014 and 2025. The findings show that early identification of the disease enables the adoption of prophylactic and therapeutic measures that significantly reduce morbidity and mortality, in addition to improving patients' quality of life. In this context, the biomedical professional plays an essential role in performing and interpreting laboratory tests, such as complete blood count, hemoglobin electrophoresis, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which are fundamental for the diagnosis and monitoring of the disease. It is concluded that early diagnosis, combined with the qualified performance of the biomedical professional and the expansion of neonatal screening programs, is crucial for the effective control of sickle cell anemia and for promoting better clinical outcomes.
