BETWEEN SOCIAL CONTEXT AND ORAL CARE: SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH AND SELF-PERCEPTION OF ORAL HEALTH IN PREGNANT WOMEN ATTENDING AT PRIMARY CARE
Abstract
Social Determinants of Health (SDH), along with self-perception related to knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP), and oral health status, may influence the health of pregnant women and their babies. This study aimed to analyze associations between SDH, oral care practices, self-perception of KAP, and oral health status in pregnant university students. This cross-sectional, analytical, observational study with a quantitative approach was conducted among pregnant women receiving prenatal care in three Primary Health Care Units in Acarape, Ceará, Brazil, from September to December 2023. After informed consent, participants completed the Household Survey of KAP in Oral Health Care. Data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. Among the 54 participants, 70.37% were aged 30 years or younger, 79.63% had a family income of one minimum wage or less, 98.15% reported using toothpaste, and 61.11% did not use dental floss. Regarding self-perception, 62.96%, 75.93%, and 74.07% demonstrated adequate perceptions of knowledge, attitude, and practice, respectively. Significant associations were observed between self-perceived oral health knowledge and poorer perceived oral health status, as well as between not using dental floss and negative self-perception. Additionally, an association was found between adequate self-perception of attitude and not using dental floss. In conclusion, SDH are linked to social vulnerability and influence oral health practices among pregnant women. Furthermore, discrepancies exist between self-perception of KAP and perceived oral health status, indicating the need for targeted educational and preventive strategies.
