ACTIVE METHODOLOGIES AND GAMIFICATION IN PRECLINICAL PERIODONTICS: AN ADVANCED APPLICATION PROTOTYPE FOR ENGAGEMENT AND MEANINGFUL LEARNING
Abstract
Dental education, particularly in preclinical disciplines such as Periodontics, faces challenges related to student motivation and engagement, often constrained by traditional, lecture-based approaches. This article presents the development of a gamified educational prototype, grounded in active learning methodologies and the Octalysis framework, aimed at promoting meaningful, participatory, and student-centered learning experiences. This is a developmental educational product study, conducted in three stages: theoretical review, pedagogical-gamified design, and creation of a functional prototype. The content was organized into four learning paths: Ergonomics in Periodontics, Scaling and Root Planning Instruments, Scaling by Sextant, and Instrument Sharpening, integrating gamification elements such as missions, rewards, feedback, and achievement levels. The results highlight the potential of gamification in health education to increase motivation, student engagement, and knowledge retention. The study underscores the importance of merging active pedagogy, technology, and motivational science in dental education, offering new perspectives for educational innovation and strengthening the teacher’s role as a learning experience designer.
