THE BILINGUAL CLASSROOM: BETWEEN LIBRAS AND PORTUGUESE
Abstract
This article analyzes the configuration of the bilingual classroom for the deaf as an essential space for pedagogical resistance and re-signification. The investigation is based on the anthropological-political paradigm of deafness, which understands the deaf subject as possessing a visual culture and a natural language. Through a literature review based on authors such as Skliar, Quadros, Lodi, and Fernandes, the study discusses the importance of Visual Pedagogy and semicircular spatial organization as strategies to ensure shared attention and communicative fluidity. It discusses the dynamics between Libras, as the language of instruction and cognitive matrix, and written Portuguese, treated as a second language (L2) under the logic of linguistic interdependence. The results indicate that the bilingual classroom functions as a "language laboratory," where teacher mediation is crucial to transforming the tension between sign and script into metalinguistic awareness. It is concluded that the effectiveness of this space requires overcoming barriers in teacher training and curricular rigidity, consolidating an education that respects linguistic uniqueness and promotes the intellectual autonomy of deaf students.
