DEVELOPING A RUNNING APPLICATION WITH GAMIFICATION TO ENCOURAGE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN BRAZIL
Abstract
Insufficient physical activity constitutes a serious public health issue in Brazil and is considered one of the main risk factors for chronic diseases. In this context, this study proposes the development of a mobile running application featuring gamification mechanics aimed at encouraging regular physical activity. Unlike solutions focused exclusively on performance tracking or narrative experiences, the proposed application is based on the playful appropriation of urban space through the symbolic dispute of routes. The methodology is characterized as applied research with a mixed-methods approach. The software development followed agile processes using the Dart programming language, the Flutter framework, and the Supabase platform for data management and integration. As a result, a functional Minimum Viable Product (MVP) was developed, capable of GPS-based monitoring and implementing a territorial conquest mechanic. User evaluation of the prototype presented preliminary evidence supporting the feasibility of the proposal, with positive results regarding usability and initial receptiveness to the developed mechanic. It is concluded that the integration of gamification and interaction with urban space shows potential as a strategy to encourage physical activity, although future studies with larger samples and long-term monitoring are necessary to further investigate the observed behavioral impacts.
