PREVALENCE OF SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS AMONG INCARCERATED WOMEN IN BRAZIL
Abstract
Introduction: Women deprived of liberty present high vulnerability to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) due to factors such as low educational level, social vulnerability, drug use, sexual violence, and difficulties in accessing health services. The prison environment favors the spread of infections such as syphilis, HIV, and HPV, increasing health risks for this population. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections among incarcerated women in Brazil and their relationship with social and structural factors. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review of a retrospective, qualitative, and descriptive nature. The search was conducted in the SciELO and PubMed databases using the descriptors “sexually transmitted infections,” “women,” “prisons,” and “incarcerated population.” Articles published between 2014 and 2025 related to the proposed theme were included. Results: The analyzed studies demonstrated high prevalence rates of STIs among incarcerated women in Brazil. Syphilis presented rates above 20% in prison units in the Northeast region. HPV showed high positivity in cervical examinations, while HIV prevalence remained above the average observed in the general population. Structural deficiencies in prison health services were also identified, hindering prevention, diagnosis, and treatment actions. Conclusion: The high prevalence of STIs among women deprived of liberty highlights failures in sexual and reproductive health care for this population. The implementation of public policies focused on early diagnosis, health education, and expanded access to appropriate treatment is necessary.
