BARRIERS AND FACILITATORS IN INCLUSIVE SPORTS PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

Abstract

The participation of children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in inclusive sports programs has been identified as a relevant strategy for promoting motor, social, and emotional development. However, structural, pedagogical, and attitudinal barriers still limit effective inclusion. This study aimed to analyze, through an integrative literature review, the main barriers and facilitators related to the participation of children and adolescents with ASD in inclusive sports programs. Studies published between 2015 and 2025, in Portuguese and Spanish, and available in full, were included. The analysis identified four categories of barriers: structural/organizational, formative, social, and individual. Conversely, environmental adaptation, professional training, family involvement, and individualized planning were highlighted as facilitators. It is concluded that the sports inclusion of people with ASD depends on intersectoral actions, continuing education, and strategies centered on the individual needs of the participants.
