EVALUATION OF TEACHERS' KNOWLEDGE ABOUT DENTAL AVULSION IN PERMANENT TEETH

Abstract

The complete displacement of a tooth from its socket is a type of alveolodental trauma called dental avulsion. Due to the damage it can cause in children and adolescents, alveolodental trauma can be considered a public health problem. Teachers are the professionals who commonly encounter traumatic injuries, since the school environment is conducive to this type of occurrence. Therefore, knowing the correct procedure in cases of dental avulsion is extremely important for a good prognosis and successful outcome. The objective of this study was to evaluate, through an adapted questionnaire, teachers' knowledge about the appropriate course of action in a possible case of dental avulsion. For this research, 116 teachers answered a questionnaire with objective questions regarding dental avulsion. The majority of the sample consisted of specialists with 11 to 20 years of experience. Of the teachers interviewed, 30% had witnessed a case of dental avulsion, 72% reported being unaware of the procedures to be performed in such cases, and more than half of the professionals reported that they do not feel confident in performing immediate dental reimplantation. There is still a lack of knowledge on the part of teachers regarding the appropriate conduct in cases of dental avulsion. Thus, the results presented have implications for school health, observing a lack of knowledge among educators in cases of avulsion of permanent teeth, suggesting the need for continuing education for this professional class in order to improve the prognosis in these cases.
