FROM THE “REFORM OF NATURE” TO “SILENT SPRING”: LITERATURE, ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION, AND REFLECTIONS ON ECOLOGICAL GOVERNANCE IN BRAZIL
Abstract
The worsening of the contemporary Brazilian socio-environmental crisis has attracted academic interest from different fields of knowledge due to the need to strengthen environmental protection strategies. In this context, this article investigates the extent to which literary narrative, as an instance of symbolic elaboration, contributes to strengthening environmental education and socio-environmental governance in Brazil. Methodologically, a qualitative, bibliographic, and interdisciplinary approach was adopted, centered on the comparative analysis of the works A Reforma da Natureza, by Monteiro Lobato, and Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson, in dialogue with the 1988 constitutional framework and Law No. 9,795/1999. The results indicate analytical convergences between the works regarding: the critique of utilitarian rationality applied to nature; the problematization of the limits of human intervention in the environment; the formative potential of literature in the construction of ecological sensibilities; and the articulation between environmental education, culture, and socio-environmental governance. It is concluded that literature does not replace legal instruments or environmental public policies, but acts as a relevant cultural mediation to strengthen formative processes, expand the social intelligibility of the contemporary ecological crisis, and strengthen socio-environmental awareness processes.

Holds a Bachelor's Degree in Letters from the Federal University of Tocantins (1999–2003) and a Bachelor's Degree in Law from the Catholic University Center of Tocantins (2007–2012). Earned a Master's Degree in Jurisdictional Services and Human Rights from the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT) and the Tocantins School of Magistracy (ESMAT), Class VIII. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Governance and Digital Transformation at the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT), in partnership with the Tocantins School of Magistracy (ESMAT).
