EVALUATION OF MEDICAL AND NON-MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS ON PALLIATIVE CARE IN AN ONCOLOGICAL HOSPITAL IN THE WEST OF PARANÁ

The view of palliative care (PC) in the world has changed over the years. It is recognized that it relieves suffering, controls symptoms, improves quality of life and care. The aim of this research was to compare the level of knowledge about palliative care among medical and non-medical professionals in an oncology hospital in western Paraná, Brazil. Cross-sectional, exploratory, descriptive study, with semi-structured and self-applicable questionnaire application through the Google Forms platform®. The research was answered by health professionals who work at an oncology hospital in the city of Cascavel-Pr. Sociodemographic issues and an adaptation of the Palliative Care Knowledge Test were part of the instrument. During the study period, 35 professionals answered the questionnaire. The study population consisted of physicians (57.1%) and non-physicians (42.9%). When applying the Palliative Care Knowledge Test, it was possible to observe that on average 87% of medical professionals answered correctly and among non-physicians were 63%. Considering the time of professional experience, the percentage of correct answers did not reveal a positive correlation. However, when the type of training was evaluated, individuals who reported not having specific training in PC had a 50% success rate, those with intermediate training correctly answered 91% of the test. In this context, the study suggests that regardless of the time of professional experience, continuous training should be applied so that the domains of PC are understood and consequently executed in practice.
