Abstract

The Mayaro virus (MAYV), is an arbovirus transmitted by the bite of hematophagous arthropods, identified in Brazil in 1955 near the Guamá River, Pará. Among its clinical symptoms are high fever, arthralgias, headache, eye pain and vomiting. The lack of investments by government agencies, research and epidemiological surveillance on THE MAYV, and the ability to move between species, represent the great challenges encountered to establish the proportion of their pathologies. In this study, the objective was to indicate the general characteristics, clinical, epidemiological and viral evolution, which may result in intense viremias or immunological alterations, through the review of indexed literatures. The results show that environmental factors, anthropic activities and urban growth provided favorable conditions for the proliferation of the vector and expansion of the virus throughout Latin America, and that the main countries affected by the virus were Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.  Due to the risk that human health means, the MAYV virus becomes significant with regard to facilities and consolidations of control, monitoring and combat measures, which can be effective, to reduce epidemics and endemic smites in Latin America, thus contributing better to public health services.
