Abstract

The practice of splitting pills consists of dividing the pill in half, and it has been increasingly common among consumers and in hospitals, with the aim of making the dose more flexible, helping with swallowing the pill or even avoiding waste. However, it is a practice without great advantages, as there is no way to ensure that the fragments of the two halves have equal concentrations and that they are equivalent to half of the original dose. This study aimed to determine the content of active principle in whole tablets of losartan potassium 50 mg, as well as its uniformity in broken tablets, from the reference, similar and a generic drug. The determination of losartan potassium was performed by titration in a non-aqueous medium, methodology specified by the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia. In whole tablets, of the three samples analyzed, there was no significant difference between the values obtained and the concentration stated on the label, at the 95% confidence level. However, for broken tablets, only the reference drug showed uniformity of active principle. It is very important to comply with the prescribed treatment in relation to the correct dosage of the drug, as these variations can compromise the patient's pharmacotherapeutic treatment.
