EMERGING THERAPIES FOR HASHIMOTOO’S THYROIDITIS: NEW COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES IN DISEASES MANAGEMENT

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most prevalent autoimmune thyroid disease and the leading cause of hypothyroidism in regions with adequate iodine intake. Although hormone replacement with levothyroxine remains the standard treatment, this approach does not directly target the immunological mechanisms underlying the disease, which has increased interest in complementary and alternative therapies. This study aimed to synthesize and critically analyze the available scientific evidence on emerging therapies in the management of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. This is a qualitative and exploratory integrative review conducted using the PubMed, SciELO, and LILACS databases, including articles published between 2015 and 2025. Clinical trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and observational studies evaluating complementary and alternative therapies in patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis were included. Study selection followed predefined criteria, and data were extracted in a standardized manner. The results indicated that vitamin D supplementation showed the greatest scientific consistency, being associated with reductions in thyroid autoantibodies and potential immunomodulatory effects. Selenium supplementation demonstrated benefits mainly in the short term. Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture showed favorable effects on clinical and laboratory parameters, while dietary interventions yielded heterogeneous results. In conclusion, complementary therapies may play an adjuvant role in the management of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. However, methodological heterogeneity among studies limits the generalizability of the findings, highlighting the need for well-designed, long-term randomized controlled trials to confirm their efficacy and safety.
