BEHAVIORAL NUTRITION AND NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCIES IN BARIATRIC SURGERY: IMPACTS ON BEHAVIOR AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING – AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

Abstract

Obesity is a global public health challenge, and while bariatric surgery is an effective intervention, it carries risks of nutritional deficiencies (iron, B12, D, folate) that affect not only physical health but also psychological well-being, being associated with fatigue, depression, and anxiety. Behavioral Nutrition emerges as an innovative approach, integrating techniques such as mindful eating, intuitive eating, motivational interviewing, and cognitive-behavioral therapy to promote dietary adherence, emotional regulation, and relapse prevention. This work, through an integrative literature review (PubMed, Scopus, SciELO, BVS, 2017-2025), selected eight articles for analysis, four of which focused on nutritional deficiency and its impact on the patient's mental health, and the other four focused on the advances of Behavioral Nutrition in the context of bariatric surgery. The results confirm the high prevalence and multifactorial impact of nutritional deficiencies on mental health, while behavioral interventions demonstrate effectiveness in modifying dysfunctional eating patterns and improving psychological well-being. It is concluded that the success of bariatric surgery requires an integrated and multidisciplinary approach, combining rigorous nutritional monitoring with evidence-based behavioral and psychosocial strategies to ensure the lasting physical health and emotional balance of patients.
