NURSING MANAGEMENT: MINTZBERG'S MANAGERIAL ROLES IN LIGHT OF BENNER'S COMPETENCY LEVELS
Abstract
Objective: To reflect on nursing management, articulating the theoretical concepts of Henry Mintzberg (managerial roles) and the levels of competence described by Patricia Benner. Method: A theoretical-reflective approach was adopted in light of Henry Mintzberg's theoretical concepts regarding managerial roles and the levels of competence described by Patricia Benner, developed or performed in nursing management. Results: The analysis shows that the professional progression described by Benner directly influences the ability of nurses to perform the roles of leadership, negotiation, monitoring, and decision-making proposed by Mintzberg. It is observed that, as clinical experience consolidates, autonomy and effectiveness in the exercise of managerial functions also increase, strengthening the identity of the nurse manager. Final Considerations: This integration provides support for more effective training practices and for the improvement of institutional strategies aimed at developing leadership in health.
