THE INFLUENCE OF ACADEMIC ORGANIZATION AND EMOTIONAL SELF-REGULATION ON ACADEMIC DELAY AMONG VETERINARY MEDICINE STUDENTS

Abstract

School delay represents one of the most difficult problems in higher education in general and in those programs with a high level of demand for particular training, as in the case of the degree in Veterinary Medicine. For a long time, academic performance was explained by the cognitive capacity of the student; however, more recent research has shown that persistence and university trajectories are linked to emotional, motivational, and behavioral factors that affect learning in a decisive way. Therefore, this article analyzes the influence of academic organization and emotional self-regulation on academic delay among university students, with special reference to the Mexican context, based on a systematic documentary review of databases such as SciELO, Redalyc, Dialnet and Google Scholar, which allows for a comparison between classical theoretical positions and recent empirical findings. According to the review of the evidence, not having academic organizational habits and not regulating behavior from an emotional point of view favors the onset of academic delay and increases the risk of school dropout.
