CLEFT LIP AND PALATE: A REVIEW ABOUT CONCEPTS, ETIOLOGY, CLASSIFICATION AND OTHER ASPECTS

Abstract

Cleft lip and palate are congenital mal formations that affect the face, more specifically in the middle third with maxillary bone involvement and occur due to the lack of junction of the maxillary and midnasal processes. The etiology of these alterations is conditioned to a number of environmental and genetic factors and their treatment should be carried out early. The aim of this study was, through a literature review, to evaluate the scientific evidence available in the, on cleft lip and palate to enable the reader to construct knowledge on the subject in a reflexive way. This study was based on a search for data in the following bibliographic databases: Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE, SCIELO and LILACS, with the temporal cut from 2008 to 2021. We can conclude that cleft lip and palate are still very frequent pathological changes and professionals should have knowledge, even if basic, about these anomalies from etiology to treatment to be prepared in situations where they should guide the legal guardians for the patient.
