Abstract

To describe a research about the mental health of the deaf person in Brazil, whose objective was to verify ways in which the mental health of the person with hearing loss is impacted in Brazil. The research method chosen was bibliographic research, targeting the hearing impaired person in Brazil. The results found were that people with hearing loss face obstacles that prevent them from achieving a good quality of life, both in professional and social life. The main obstacles encountered were the lack of accessibility and communication barriers in different spheres of life, within the family nucleus, in the school period and in society. It is worth mentioning that communication is a necessary resource for the development of both the deaf and the listener. Without it, we are unable to produce life experiences, to build our view of the world and of ourselves, unable to exchange experiences and maintain relationships. It is concluded that the deaf person encounters incapacitating situations since childhood for communicational reasons.
