The present study presents a systematic review of the literature on business intelligence (BI) in public sector management, with the main objective of identifying applications and contributions in the context of approach. The research was carried out in the Scopus database and analyzed 14 articles selected based on adherence to the proposal. The study identifies that, despite the significant increase in the rate of BI implementation in the public sector, the failures in its implementation are equally significant. The definition, evaluation, qualification and selection phases reveal themselves to be mechanisms to overcome the challenges in implementing BI and generate greater success. Generating, collecting, analyzing and systematically reusing data can optimize resources to meet constantly growing social demands, improving processes and implementing new products and services. BI presents itself as a strategic tool for public organizations, which seek to visualize and monitor processes, and simulate future scenarios for more assertive decision-making. As a recommendation for future work, the study guides empirical investigations on the possibilities of BI applications in different contexts of the Brazilian public sector, in order to broaden academic discussions and present its benefits to public managers and society.
