PSYCHOSOCIAL IMPACTS OF BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER IN THE FAMILY: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

Abstract

Objective: To integrate the main scientific evidence on the psychosocial impacts of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) on the family. Method: This is an integrative review in which the literature search was conducted in the following databases: PsycInfo, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System (Medline) via Pubmed, Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS) via (BVS) and PePSIC. Results and Discussion: 16 studies were selected, whose results were integrated into two categories, with their subdivisions: social impacts (communication of the diagnosis by the health team; access to services; financial problems; stigma and support network) and psychological impacts (subjective overload; psychiatric disorders and coping with dysfunctional behaviors). Conclusion: It can be inferred that since the beginning of BPD symptoms the family already faces significant impacts, generating overload and worsening in the diagnosed family member's condition. Family members need to be actively involved in the patient's treatment, and more investment is needed in research on strategies that can help them minimize the psychosocial impacts of BPD on the family.
