GESTATIONAL OBESITY IN BRAZIL: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Introduction: Excessive weight gain during pregnancy strongly contributes to the obesity epidemic in modern times and to pregnancy complications. Objective: To evaluate the panorama of obese pregnant women in Brazil and the causes that led to the increase in obesity in this group, as well as the complications caused by weight gain during pregnancy and childbirth. Methodology: The research was carried out in May 2022, 13,884 articles were found in the databases, and 26 articles were selected that make up this literature review. Result: articles indicate that most pregnant women are overweight and obese due to inadequate nutrition and excess intake of industrialized and processed foods. Moreover, this situation is independent of income, as even those who receive government assistance are overweight. In this context, overweight and obesity trigger diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Conclusion: Obesity in pregnant women is a public health problem that affects a large number of women in Brazil. Thus, broad public health policies are needed to address the obesity epidemic in the country, as pregnant women can develop complications during pregnancy and throughout their lives.
