Abstract

This article presents the development and validation of a medical isolation capsule for COVID-19 patients, called the "Vanessa Capsule", which meets the requirements of low cost and easy handling to meet the demand in remote areas of the Amazon region, where there is a lack of ICU beds and mechanical ventilators. The capsule is designed to be used in conjunction with non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and features an automatic exhaust system and filters for CO2 exchange, as well as BiPap ventilatory support equipment. The study evaluated the effectiveness of the capsule in protecting against aerosols and found that the degree of effectiveness in protection is satisfactory, making it an auxiliary method to be considered by the healthcare team. Furthermore, it was found that early treatment with non-invasive mechanical ventilation in association with isolation through the Vanessa capsule reduces patient suffering and positively contributes to their recovery, according to medical observation of the evaluated patients. In summary, the Vanessa capsule may provide an effective and economical solution for the treatment and control of COVID-19 in remote areas with inadequate medical resources.
