Abstract

The objective of this review was to answer the following question: what is the oral microbial profile of totally edentulous patients with a history of periodontitis? A scope review was performed on PRISMA. The Medline/pubmed, Cochrane Library and Lilacs databases were searched using a search strategy. Human studies were included, with the selection of volunteers with a history of periodontitis that led to the total extraction of dental elements (totally edentulous patients), and with oral biofilm samples from the teeth before extraction and from any part of the mouth after extraction. Information was collected from each study and recorded in predefined forms. The information of the variables extracted from the selected articles was summarized and presented qualitatively, through tables and reported of the results achieved. It was possible to identify four studies that met the eligibility criteria. The oral microbial profile of totally edentulous patients with a history of periodontitis that led to the need for tooth extraction consists of periopathogens (e.g., Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia), which remain in the oral cavity even after tooth extraction, but in lower concentrations. Thus, it is important that dental professionals perform effective periodontal treatments that reach all surfaces of the oral cavity in individuals diagnosed with periodontitis, even with the future indication of dental elements. For, even in the face of the decrease of periopathogens after tooth extraction, these still remain in the oral cavity and could be the initial focus for future oral infectious diseases.
