THE USE OF LOW-POWER LASER IN DENTIN HYPERSENSITIVITY: LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Dental hypersensitivity is one of the biggest oral health problems for large part
of the population, causing discomfort and being able to generate a series of
inconveniences in life, both in physiological and psycho-social terms of the individual.
Brännström's hydrodynamic theory is one of the most accepted in the current literature
on the origin of dental hypersensitivity, which reports that the pain generated arises
under the effect of a certain external stimulus, which alters the histophysiology of the
fluid present in the dentinal tubules, in order to cause the characteristic sensation of
pain. Commonly presented in the cervical third part of the vestibular face, also in
lingual and palatal surfaces. It is worth noting that canines are the most affected teeth,
then in descending order come the first premolars, incisors, second premolars and first
molars. Many methods can be applied in order to treat dental hypersensitivity, but, with
great emphasis, the procedures with the use of low power laser have been the first
choice of dental surgeons in this treatment. Low power laser is used in order to reduce
the patient's sensitivity, where the patient's dentin and dentinal tubules are exposed,
causing intense pain, although of short duration. The main reasons for hypersensitivity
originate from the phenomena of abfraction, abrasion and erosion.
