IMPACT OF CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE IN AN ADOLESCENT UNDERGOING HEMODIALYSIS TREATMENT AT DR. WALTER STRANGWAY HOSPITAL

Abstract

In order to evaluate the impact of hemodialysis treatment on an adolescent, a study was conducted at the DR. Walter Strangway Hospital in the province of Bié, Angola, in which the impact of the treatment was evaluated through a semi-extruded interview directed to the adolescent and her family and the hospitalization process, diagnosed with Chronic Renal Failure (CRF). The study had a descriptive exploratory character, with a qualitative approach. The 14-year-old black female adolescent was referred to the Provincial Hospital, with an apparently healthy state for one year, when she began a clinical picture characterized by decreased urine output, dyspnea, general asthenia, anorexia, fatigue, severe headache. After a medical evaluation, it was decided to perform complementary tests such as urea, creatinine, echocardiogram and ultrasound, and was diagnosed with CRF. The study showed that Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) affected their eating routine, as well as their water routine, and it had to be readjusted after the start of treatment; Productivity also decreased, because she can no longer perform the work she was doing because she could not exert herself, due to the need for long-term catheter care, in addition to feeling tired and weak after hemodialysis sessions. It is concluded that the changes that occur in the life of the adolescent in hemodialysis treatment go beyond the physical alterations, she presents emotional and psychosocial impairment that directly interferes in her quality of life, a fact that may compromise the continuity of the treatment.
