Abstract

Introduction: Sodium and glucose cotransporter inhibitors are drugs initially developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, the mechanism of cardiovascular benefit was quickly discovered through their direct and pleiotropic effects. In this study, the mechanisms of action of SGLT2 inhibitors related to cardiovascular benefits will be reviewed. Objectives: To describe the mechanisms of SGLT2 inhibitors linked to their effectiveness in the treatment of comorbidities related to diabetes mellitus. Methods: The guiding question was formulated "What are the mechanisms that lead to the cardiovascular benefits of SGLT2 inhibitors?", thus, bibliographical research was carried out, using the PubMed/Medline database, with the following terms: "SGLT2 inhibitors", "Cardiovascular", "Mechanism", using Boolean operators for combination. The main studies related to the objectives of the study were selected. Results and discussion: It was observed that SGLT-2 Inhibitors presents mechanisms of action compatible with the benefits demonstrated in the randomized clinical trials, many of them indirect to the main glycosuric effect of the medication. Conclusion: SGLT-2 inhibitors demonstrate great benefit in the treatment of heart failure, being a class with great potential for benefit in other diseases given their indirect metabolic effects.
