Abstract

Elastography is the science that creates non-invasive images of the mechanical characteristics of tissues. Ultrasound elastography is currently used in ultrasound evaluation of breast, prostate, thyroid, pancreas, spleen, kidney, testicles and musculoskeletal, but no obstetric or gynecological indications are mentioned. Objectives: to verify the effectiveness of ultrasound elastography for the diagnosis of deep infiltrative endometriosis. Materials and methods: this is an integrative review, in which the guiding question was “How effective is ultrasound elastography in diagnosing deep infiltrative endometriosis?”. The search for articles took place in the PubMed database using the terms "Ultrasound elastography", "Elastosonography", "diagnosis" AND "endometriosis", combined with each other using the Boolean operator AND. Results and discussion: Elastography is capable of measuring the mechanical properties and elasticity of tissues. It is used to aid in the diagnosis of various diseases. Elastography showed high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of deep pelvic endometriosis and its findings correlated with histopathological results, with high specificity and sensitivity values, which makes the method effective. Conclusion: in addition to offering a non-invasive and sensitive technique to better define endometriotic infiltration, ultrasound elastography also has better accuracy than all available diagnostic methods.
