COMPARISON OF THE MICROBIOTA ON THE HANDS OF 1st AND 6th YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS

Abstract

The main route of transmission of microorganisms occurs through the hands of healthcare professionals, resulting in an increase in Healthcare-Associated Infections. Therefore, the present study aims to compare the microbiota on the hands of students in the first and final year of the Medicine course. a private college in Ribeirão Preto-SP, with the purpose of observing whether there is a change in the microbiota in the students' academic career, since, during the course, contact with healthcare environments is introduced. Microbiological samples were analyzed, collected with a sterile swab, from the hands of 1st and 6th year Medicine students. The materials were seeded, incubated and duly identified through quantitative and qualitative analysis. Among those isolated and identified, the most prevalent bacteria was Staphylococcus aureus (100%), followed by coagulase-negative Staphylococcus and gram-positive bacilli. The difference between first and sixth year students was relevant when considering the difference in species growth between the two. Furthermore, we found that the bacteria showed different sensitivity between isolates from samples from 1st year and 6th year students. Notably, the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus showed a high level of resistance to the antimicrobials meropenem, ampicillin and ceftriaxone. However, he was 100% sensitive to amoxicillin + clavulanate, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin and vancomycin. Given this, the influence of hospital contact during the Medicine course on the microbiota of the hands can be noted, highlighting the importance of correct hand hygiene.
