MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES IN THE TREATMENT OF CHRONIC PAIN IN THE ELDERLY: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Introduction: Chronic pain in the elderly is prevalent and debilitating, requiring multidisciplinary therapeutic approaches. The complexity of this condition is compounded by factors such as comorbidities, physiological changes and polypharmacy. Objective: A bibliographic review was carried out, covering studies published in the last 15 years on the multidisciplinary treatment of chronic pain in the elderly. Methods: A literature review was carried out, covering studies published in the last 15 years on the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain in the elderly. Inclusion criteria were established and electronic databases were searched. Results and Discussion: The prevalence of chronic pain in the elderly varies, affecting up to 80% of the population in some countries. It has a negative impact on quality of life and is associated with functional and emotional limitations. Diagnostic assessment requires a comprehensive approach, considering comorbidities and validated assessment scales. Therapeutic management involves pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, with an emphasis on rehabilitation, promoting well-being and patient education. Conclusion: A multidisciplinary approach is crucial in the management of chronic pain in the elderly, aiming for comprehensive and personalized care. Patient education, self-management strategies and the promotion of emotional well-being are fundamental to improving quality of life in this population. It is hoped that this summary will contribute to clinical practice and to a better quality of life for older people with chronic pain.
