TEXTILE WASTE: INCORRECT DISPOSAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS

Abstract

The environment is a set of conditions that influence life, including laws that allow the development and relationships between beings. However, this environment is constantly affected by human impacts, such as unrestrained resource extraction and inadequate waste disposal. These impacts can be negative or positive and temporary or permanent, resulting in harm to public health and safety. Standards and regulations are developed to guide waste management and minimize these impacts, prioritizing the reduction, reuse, recycling, treatment and appropriate disposal of waste. Solid waste management involves understanding its classification and characteristics, with textile waste being classified as class II A, that is, not inert, but with the potential for recycling or reuse. The textile industry has invested in improvements in waste management to meet market demands and sustainable development goals, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda. Incorrect disposal of textile waste is closely related to environmental impacts, as evidenced by excessive production in Brazil and other countries such as the 'fashion graveyard' in Chile's Atacama Desert. To mitigate these impacts, it is crucial to adopt a product lifecycle perspective from the beginning of the project, aligning with sustainable objectives. Thus, the study aims to carry out a narrative review of the literature to analyze the relationship between the incorrect disposal of textile waste and environmental impacts, highlighting the need for innovation in the design and disposal of these products in the textile industry.
