PROFILE OF PARENTERAL NUTRITIONAL THERAPY USERS IN HOSPITALS IN THE BRAZILIAN SCENARIO: A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Nutritional Therapy are therapeutic procedures performed on patients capable of meeting their nutritional and metabolic needs orally. This set of procedures for maintenance or recovery of the patient in nutritional status through Parenteral (NP) or Enteral (EN) nutrition. To investigate the profile of patients diagnosed with Parenteral Nutritional Therapy (NPT) in Brazilian hospitals. This is a systematic review carried out following the PRISMA recommendation (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis). A search was carried out to select the studies in five databases: Latin American Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Scientific Electronic, Library Online (SciELO) and Medline, using the search descriptors: “Nutrition Therapy”, “Parenteral Nutrition” and“Brazil”, through the Boolean operators“ and ”and“ or ”. Inclusion criteria were: original articles, related to the topic of interest in this study and published in the last five years (2015-2020) in Portuguese and English. Through research in the databases, 57 articles were found, these were selected 43 from the last 5 years, of which 2 were duplicates and 12 did not meet the inclusion criteria included a priori, data in 14 articles. A risk of malnutrition according to NRS-2002 and a high risk of malnutrition according to 'MUST' increased patient costs, respectively, by 21.1% and 28.8%. Parenteral nutritional therapy portrays an important part of the costly treatment of hospitalized patients, especially in cases of cancer. According to the distribution data, the cost of parenteral diet was higher in the group of deaths.
