PATIENT SAFETY IN THE OPERATING ROOM: THE ROLE OF NURSING

Abstract

Objective: To reflect on the importance of the nurse's role and report on the role of nursing in the operating room regarding the implementation of patient safety protocols, clarifying the difficulties encountered by nurses in the implementation and adherence to these protocols by all team members. Method: This is a qualitative study, searching for scientific articles published in national and international journals, in Portuguese, English and Spanish. Data collection occurred in the databases Medical Literature Analysis and Retrival System Online (MEDLINE), Nursing Database (BDENF), Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS), and in the electronic library Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). Results: In the surgical environment, the role of nursing is fundamental, ensuring the best care practices that provide patient safety. The importance of the use of institutional protocols is emphasized, since this facilitates the standardization and continuity of care, contributing to a good interpersonal relationship and consequently a favorable work environment. Final Considerations: It is understood that this theme is of great relevance, considering the worldwide concern and the protocols created to date, it is noted the need to establish patient safety in health organizations in order to promote a decrease in unnecessary damage caused to surgical patients.
