Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by decreased kidney function lasting three months or more. Psychosocial and biological changes related to dialysis treatment increase the risk of developing depression in CKD patients, in addition to loss of quality of life. This study aims to organize the main information about quality of life and depressive symptoms in CKD patients on hemodialysis. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review on quality of life and depression in chronic renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis. The search was conducted in reliable databases (PubMed, Scielo and Google Scholar), using the keywords "hemodialysis", "chronic kidney disease", "depression" and "mental health", combined with the Boolean operators AND and OR. Results and discussion: Dialysis patients tend to have worse quality of life and higher prevalence of depression and anxiety. The approach to these individuals should be multidisciplinary, both for the promotion of physical and mental health, by therapy and intradialytic physical exercises, performed in the hospital environment itself. Final considerations: Therefore, it is concluded that hemodialysis affects patients physically and psychologically, especially in the long term. Health promotion measures should be implemented in order to promote quality of life for these individuals
