THE APPROACH FOR PARENTS TO THE CAUSES AND TREATMENT OF CHILD BRUXISM: A SCOPE REVIEW

INTRODUCTION: Bruxism can be a serious problem affecting a child's quality of life. Teeth grinding in bruxism is caused by clenching of the teeth due to contraction of the masseter, temporalis, and other jaw muscles. They score different characteristics between daytime and nighttime bruxism. OBJECTIVE: To map in the literature the causes of bruxism, the diagnostic obstacles and the types of approach performed for parents by professionals. METHODOLOGY: A scoping review study with a quantitative approach. RESULTS: Fifteen articles were identified to compose this review. The findings identified that bruxism is difficult to diagnose, since parents have difficulty in identifying signs of the pathology due to lack of knowledge. As causes, the articles pointed out anxiety, the use of electronic devices, the increase of dopamine, and other causes that can lead to bruxism. As an approach, it was identified that health education for parents by dental professionals is the most efficient method to bring knowledge to these families, who mostly only know about the diagnosis after the appointment with the professional. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: Given these findings, it is important to carry out studies that can bring reflections on the approach for parents about bruxism, especially for parents with low education and financial situation.
