Nystagmus is an ocular dysfunction

Abstract

Nystagmus is an ocular dysfunction in which an unconscious rhythmic rocking of one or both eyes can be noted. It may be associated with a pathological lesion of the afferent visual pathway or a disorder in motor eye control. The approach of this study is important for professionals to know about the signs and symptoms, the causes and characteristics, classification, related pathologies, optometric conduct that can be conducted and treatment options. A literature review was carried out in Scielo, Google Academic and VHL indexes, aiming at quality of life and comfort for patients with nystagmus through a multidisciplinary team of Neurologists and Optometrists working on behalf of the patient in search of better visual acuity and eye fixation. It is shown that this condition causes discomfort and social and cultural delay for the carrier.
