Abstract

This research deals with Spinoza's conception about the role of affects in politics. The problem under analysis is the political expression of the mass and the crowd; in the first case, the individuals that compose it are guided only by the affects, whereas the individuals that make up the crowd use reason as a means of knowing the causes of the affects and, thus, avoid those that can lead to the loss of potency (conatus), elementary principle for the conservation of one's own existence, the existence of the crowd and, still, to act politically. Research begins with an exposition of the particular nature of individuals; in the sequence, the political expression of the mass and the crowd is brought into focus and, finally, the relationship of the crowd with the Civil State is shown, according to Spinoza's conception. As a balance, it is evident that the affections are not above or below reason, but, rather, reason and affections must be complementary for the political order to intensify individual potentialities.
