GERD is a condition of uncomfortable symptoms and complicationsAbstract
Introduction: GERD is a condition of uncomfortable symptoms and complications that result from the reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus. Studies suggest that it occurs in about 50% of infants younger than 2 months of age, 60 to 70% of infants aged 3 to 4 months, and 5% of infants aged 12 months. The aim is to gather evidence to confirm the safety of drug treatment for GERD in children. Materials and methods: The research was carried out using the following descriptors: “gastroesophageal reflux diseases”, “children” and “drug treatment” combined with Boolean operators. By applying all the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a sample of 5 articles was obtained. Results and discussion: Drug treatment of GERD basically consists of proton pump inhibitor drugs (PPIs), which block the final step of gastric acid release due to inhibition of the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme. Regarding the association of non-drug methods to acid suppression therapy, a randomized clinical trial was carried out with the aim of clarifying the superiority of the combined treatment. Conclusion: It is concluded that treatment with PPIs and even the off-label use of metoclopramide can be beneficial as anti-reflux therapy in the pediatric population.
