PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES OF HEART RATE IN SPECIFIC ENDURANCE TRAINING USING SMALL-SIDED CONDITIONING GAMES IN BASKETBALL

Abstract

An efficient pedagogical strategy to develop specific endurance in team sports is the use of smallsided conditioning games. That said, the aim of this study is to describe the physiological responses of heart rate in specific endurance training using small-sided conditioning games in basketball. With this premise, five electronic databases were consulted (PubMed, Google Scholar, Scielo, MEDLINE and LILACS) and a total of 61 published studies were chosen that addressed the behavior of heart rate in specific endurance training sessions with small-sided games and 16 textbooks in the area of exercise physiology and sport training theory. Small-sided games generate stimulation that is superior to other methods of endurance, as they manage to work the technical-tactical aspects and physical conditioning of basketball players in a single activity. One way to control the internal load during small-sided games is the systematic monitoring of heart rate indicators. However, the heart rate response in small-sided games depends on the correct interrelation of the modifiable components (court size, number of players involved, adopted rules, requested metabolic regime and effort-pause ratio). Changes in one or more of these modifiable components can induced alterations in load intensity. Linked to this, the researches adopt different experimental protocols and varied competitive categories, making interpretative comparisons difficult. Another important detail is that the players' gender and tactical roles interfere in these results. Finally, operational suggestions are presented when configuring specific endurance training with small-sided games in basketball.
