Human Tooth Banks (HRDs). MethodologyAbstract
To review the literature on the importance of Human Tooth Banks (HRDs). Methodology: The databases BBO, Lilacs, SciELO, Google scholar and PubMed were used. We collected complete scientific articles related to the theme, published between the years 2013 to 2023, in Portuguese and English. The descriptors in Portuguese and English respectively were: "Bioethics"/ "Bioethics", "Tissue and Organ Procurement"/ "Tissue and Organ Procurement", "Tooth"/ "Tooth" and "Education in Dentistry"/ "Education, Dental". Results: 80 studies were selected, 24 were excluded for exceeding the delimited time of 10 years. After reading, 40 studies were discarded according to the exclusion criteria, resulting in 16 articles. The BDHs are autonomous entities of great impact on the didactic-scientific process within the institutions of Dental education and are fundamental in the application of the current legislation regarding the donation of organs in the country. The competencies of BDHs are: the collection, cleaning, storage and distribution of teeth, as well as the formulation of awareness and dissemination campaigns. Conclusion: The importance of BDHs consists in performing an educational function of valuing the dental organ and in making available human dental elements, which were granted voluntarily, for use in anatomical studies, preclinical training and scientific research. The concession and use of the extracted elements allow a practical and effective academic formation. In addition, more studies on BDHs are needed to disseminate and raise awareness among the general population.
