The Psychiatric Reform movement was a significant milestone in the history of Brazil that aimed to change the treatment system for people with mental disorders. However, there is still an increase in the occupation of psychiatric beds in Brazil. This study aimed to evaluate the profile of psychiatric hospitalizations in the State of São Paulo between 2009 and 2020. Descriptive and retrospective study with a quantitative approach. The search was carried out in the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System of DATASUS. Psychiatric hospitalizations in the State of São Paulo between 2009 and 2020 were considered. Descriptive data analysis was performed. The total sample consisted of 746,403 hospitalizations for mental and behavioral disorders from January 2009 to July 2020 in the State of São Paulo. 61.5% of admissions were male, 25.41% were aged between 30 and 39 years, and 53.0% were white. 37.9% of hospitalizations were in the private regime. The year 2011 had the highest rate of admissions, 10.2%. The greater São Paulo region had the highest hospitalization rate, totaling 40.70% of hospitalizations. Although the Psychiatric Reform movement has contributed to psychiatric deinstitutionalization, the results of this study demonstrate an increased number of hospitalizations for mental and behavioral disorders in the State of São Paulo.
