TREATMENT OF EXTERNAL ROOT RESORPTION DUE TO ECTOPIC CANINE DURING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT: A NARRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

A large percentage of patients with maxillary hypoplasia may have ectopic canines, and it is worrying that these teeth may cause root resorption of the incisors. The aim of this narrative literature review was to gather and analyse the most up-to-date information on the subject in order to improve orthodontic treatment and avoid the loss of incisors and canines, since the study seeks to provide information on the proper management of this type of complication during orthodontic treatment and, if possible, to avoid the extraction of ectopic canines. For this, a literature review of the last five years was carried out in digital repositories such as Pubmed and Google Scholar, using the Mendeley database for bibliographic reference, including only research from the last five years. The most important results show that the female sex is more susceptible to the activation of external root resorption, it is interleukin 2 that participates in the inflammatory factor at the apical level, this resorption can be stopped with a specialised endodontic treatment with the use of bioceramic materials that have the ability to stop the inflammatory process and thus prevent inflammation from continuing, they also have the ability to generate alkaline pH, avoiding any type of infection. It is concluded that the management of this type of alterations in dental development should be done in a multidisciplinary way, in order to avoid the loss of ectopic anterior canines and incisors.
