PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF VERTIGO AND ASSOCIATED RISK FACTORS: A LITERATURE REVIEW
Abstract
Introduction: Vertigo is a common and complex symptom with several underlying causes. It covers a wide range of disorders ranging from benign, self-limiting conditions to more serious and recurrent problems that have met specialized treatment. Methodology: The research was carried out in the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane Library. The search was restricted to studies published in English or Portuguese published from 2013 to 2023. Results and Discussion: The identification of risk factors is essential for the prevention, early diagnosis and effective treatment of vertigo. Regarding age, several studies have shown that the prevalence of vertigo increases significantly with the aging of the population. In addition, vertigo is more common in women. Other important risk factors include a family history of vertigo, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, and medical conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Conclusion: Vertigo is an intriguing symptom, resulting from an intricate interaction between the vestibular, sensory and emotional systems. The identification of the unconscious to vertigo is essential for an accurate diagnosis and the development of effective therapeutics for the management of this debilitating condition.
