EFFECTIVENESS OF PLATELET-RICH PLASMA FOR THE TREATMENT OF ANDROGENETIC ALOPECIA

Abstract

Introduction: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a multifactorial dermatological pathology, of polygenic origin, characterized by alteration of the hair cycle, leading to progressive follicular miniaturization, which leaves the terminal hairs thinner. Objectives: to evaluate the efficacy and side effects of treatment with platelet-rich plasma in patients with AGA. Materials and methods: This is an integrative review, in which the guiding question was “Is platelet-rich plasma effective in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia?”. The search for articles took place in the PubMed database using the terms “efficacy”, “platelet-rich plasma”, “treatment” and “androgenetic alopecia”, combined with each other using the Boolean operator AND. Results and discussion: The results showed that PRP is effective in treating AGA, without major side effects. Of the 13 articles analyzed, 4 compared the effectiveness of PRP therapy in relation to Minoxidil, one of which analyzed the two substances in combined therapy. Comparative studies between PRP and Minoxidil showed that both were well tolerated and effective. A meta-analysis that sought to identify the effectiveness of PRP monotherapy in men and women separately, evaluating capillary density and diameter, PRP significantly increased capillary diameter in both sexes, but capillary density was significantly increased only in males. Conclusion: Most of the studies analyzed in this review showed positive results regarding the use of PRP in AGA, both in males and females.
