PROPRIOCEPTIVE NEUROMUSCULAR FACILITATION IN THE TREATMENT OF PATIENTS WITH SPASTIC CEREBRAL PALSY: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Abstract

Introduction: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is characterized by neurological alterations that occur in childhood, compromising motor and cognitive development. It is a movement and posture disorder characterized mainly by motor impairment, accompanied by other disorders. Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) in the treatment of patients with spastic cerebral palsy. Methods: This is a systematic review of randomized clinical trials analyzed by two independent reviewers, as recommended by the PRISMA platform, using the National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) and LILACS databases. Results: Five studies addressing proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation in the treatment of patients with spastic cerebral palsy were included, and the PEDro scale was used to analyze the methodological quality of the articles. Conclusion: Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation is a promising concept for improving balance, gait, trunk control, pelvic alignment and functional independence in patients with spastic cerebral palsy. However, in the current literature, more high-quality evidence is needed to establish the efficacy of PNF in the treatment of these patients.
