Abstract

Preheating composite resins such as bulk fill and conventional resins can reduce viscosity and increase fluidity in the material. However, this preheating can have effects on mechanical properties and clinical applicability. Mechanical properties that can be changed include microhardness, fluidity, tensile strength, among others. Although preheating is in widespread use, it is up to the professional to be aware of the complications that may occur with composite resins. Therefore, this work aims to structure a systematic review with the theme “Repercussions of preheating bulk fill and conventional resins on mechanical properties and clinical applicability”. 13 articles were included to structure the review. The data found demonstrate that preheating reduces the elution of unreacted monomers and does not change the mechanical properties. Clinical studies demonstrate that preheating does not cause damage to the dental pulp or longevity when inserted into cavity preparations. The data collected here also demonstrates the lack of research on this topic, requiring more in-depth work to elucidate possible changes in mechanical and physical properties with preheating of composite resins in general.
