ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN INTESTINAL MICROBIOTA AND DEPRESSION: MAIN MECHANISMS AND NUTRITIONAL MANAGEMENT

Introduction – Depression is a complex disease with multifactorial roots that profoundly affect mental health and quality of life. Recent research emphasizes the influence of the gut microbiota and gut-brain communication on depression. Imbalances in the microbiota can contribute to depression by triggering inflammation and affecting neurotransmitters. Methods – The methodology used in this study consisted of an integrative literature review, which is a research method that allows the synthesis of information from different studies on a specific topic. Articles in English were selected from the U.S. National Library of Medicine (PubMed) database with MeSH terms relevant to the topic. Results – Analysis of the studies showed that diet plays a crucial role in mental health, with specific nutrients playing an important role. Recent studies point to the potential of probiotics especially Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium stains, in reducing depressive symptoms and improving quality of life. However, the effectiveness of these probiotics can very, and more research is needed to fully understand their role in depression and nutritional management. Conclusions – The intersection between gut microbiota, diet and mental health is a promising area of study, and research continues in search of more effective approaches to treating depression.
