SUICIDE IN PSYCHIATRIC PATIENTS: BIBLIOGRAPHIC REVIEW

Abstract

Suicide is the 15th most common cause of death in the world. Suicide rates are higher in the group of people with disorders. Thus, suicide emerges as a worldwide public health problem, affecting people of different ages. This study aims to identify risk factors for suicidal behavior in psychiatric patients, in order to provide information for preventive strategies, in order to contribute to a better understanding to improve the health situation and support the planning of preventive actions in health services. This is an integrative literature review. The sample was selected by accessing the following databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and US National Library of Medicine (PubMed Central) using the descriptors Mortality, Suicide and Psychiatric Patients. Full articles related to the research object were included in the review, without language restrictions, in the period 2015-2020. For exclusion, the following were obtained: publications with lower dates and incomplete production. Thus, Scielo and PubMed 09 articles were selected as corpus of analysis. It was evident in this integrative review that the majority of people who try or die by suicide have significant psychiatric comorbidity. The risk of suicide varies with the type of psychiatric disorder and is more common to be associated with depression and drug use disorders. Suicidal behavior is closely linked to previous psychosocial illness, with depression being the psychiatric disorder most related to suicide attempt.
