Diagnostic wax-up (DW) is defined as the set of prosthetic parameters necessary for the diagnostic process, reproducing in wax the restorations planned in a study model. The objective of the present work is to explore, through a review of scientific literature, the practical applications of DW in different areas of Dentistry. A descriptive and bibliographical literature review was carried out on the practice of DW. To this end, a bibliographic survey was carried out in periodicals through advanced searches in the PUBMED, LILACS, BBO, VHL and Google Scholar databases. The review was conducted with scientific articles, with inclusion criteria being studies published in full between 2013 and 2023, written in Portuguese, Spanish and English. As exclusion criteria, duplicate articles, editorials, summaries, manuals and theses were eliminated. The practical applications of ED allow the patient to participate in treatment planning, reducing bias in aesthetic perception between patient and professional and represents a planning option with predictability and safety in dental treatments.
