Abstract

Radiation therapy is a treatment in which ionizing radiation is used to destroy a tumor or prevent its cells from enlarging. Thus, the study aimed to understand the nursing diagnosis in patients with colorectal cancer undergoing radiotherapy. This is an integrative review research, based on bibliographic studies of sources of published articles. In order to understand the guiding question "the nursing diagnosis in patients with colorectal cancer undergoing radiotherapy treatment", the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS) databases, the SciELO library – Scientific Electronic Library Online and PUBMED were accessed, journals, theses and dissertations were searched through the advanced search. Therefore, the following terms were used: "nursing diagnosis", "colorectal cancer" and "radiotherapy". It is necessary, therefore, to understand that colorectal cancer encompasses tumors that affect a segment of the large intestine (the colon) and the rectum. It is treatable and, in most cases, curable, when it is detected early, when it has not yet spread to other organs. Radiotherapy is a very important resource for the treatment of cancer of the rectum, the final part of the large intestine, which connects the colon to the anus. It can be used before surgery to decrease recurrence rates (return of the disease) and the size of the tumor, in order to allow for more appropriate resection (extraction).
