CHALLENGING HETERONORMATIVITY: IMPACTS AND RESISTANCE IN FEMALE HOMOAFFECTIONATE RELATIONSHIPS

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of heteronormativity on female homosexual relationships, as the social invisibility of these relationships makes it difficult to create affirmative actions in mental health care. Heteronormativity is a social and cultural standard whose prerogatives stigmatize non-conforming individuals, exerting control and belittling legitimate sexual identities. The study aims to identify the influence of heteronormativity in the construction of identity, romantic experiences, and behaviors of lesbian women in the face of heteronormativity. Using an integrative review method to analyze articles produced between 2019 and 2023 that were found in the databases Scielo, Google Scholar, Pepsic, and Lilacs. The results and discussion reveal significant impacts, including the internalization of prejudice, the need to hide relationships, and the assimilation of gender roles. The research also highlights how the lack of representativeness and social acceptance has contributed to isolation, mental health issues, and even suicide. At the same time, it emphasizes the importance of social support, resistance, and the search for inclusive communities as ways to face these challenges. This work expands the understanding of the effects of heteronormativity on the lives of homosexual women, highlighting the need for more research to foster greater visibility and social acceptance.
